A few days ago, I received my very first blog comment by a Thai reader named Tavorn Kamboonreang concerning the Preah Vihear issue. Hoping not to spark further hatred among the two peoples, I’d tried to restrain myself from responding, though deep inside I was very upset by his thoughtless comment.
Dear Khamen(Cambodian) Neighbors,
You think you win the Preah Vihear World Heritage now but soon you will see that you lost because UNESCO will send 7 nations including Thailand to “invade” your country. UNESCO ripped our two countries apart by siding with you and your foxy politicians. You know where you belong. Look at Phnom Penh which was built to model after Bangkok by King Narodom who lived and worked in Bangkok under Thai Royal Patronage for years. Rejoice now but be prepared to get back to be under Thailand’s protection again because you need to be where you belong. I am your Thai neighbor and it’s my duty to help you get back to your good sense. Remember who help you when your country was under the Khmer Rouge-Pol Pot and your refugees had nowhere else to run to but Thailand. Please take care and be grateful.
Shortly after, a Cambodian reader under the name Khmerthug4life posted a respond to the comment, which I thought was pretty well-reasoned.
To: Tavorn Kamboonreang
Straight up chuz!!! My Khmer folks never teach us Khmers to hate the Thais. That’s real talk. You’re right [that] both countries are just as bad to one another. But when it comes down to the line, Thailand has done more harm to innocent Khmer civilians than Khmers has ever done to any Thais. In fact, during the 800s as it was documented, Thais aka Siam were living in Nanchao, Southern China, until the Mongols invaded and forced them to flee into Khmer land. Tai people were welcome in Cambodia (Funan) and they were helped by the Khmer King Brother’s Preah Rong. (Read: Eksar Maha Boros Khmer)
Thai refugee camps were not free. Read “Quality of Mercy” of William Shawcros. Shawcross was a journalist following about 45,000 Khmer refugees running into Thailand seeking for help, but instead those poor Khmers were forced by Thai soldiers to get onto buses and transfer to the Preah Vihear Khmer-Thai border. Those poor Khmer refugees were forced by Thai soldiers to walk across the minefields back to Cambodia.
Shawcross estimated thousands were killed by Thai soldiers and by landmines.Thai cruelty provoked the international community and the UN. Thailand was forced by the international community and the UN to accept money and guarantee, so that the international community and the UN can get all Khmer refugees out of Thailand safely. [In another case,] Thai soldiers [would] beat up Khmer children who played the Thai coins on which there was an emblem of the Thai King.
Read the Preah Vihear temple case. It has been almost 50 years now that Thailand lost a case against Cambodia and Thailand today continues to protest against Cambodia over the same Khmer temple non-stop.
It is Thailand that hates Cambodia, not Cambodia hates Thailand!!!
And this morning, Tavorn Kamboonreang was back with another defensive yet ridiculous comment.
Dear Good Khamen Neighbors,
Say whatever you want about Thai people. You don’t know the real Thai spirit because you are not Thai. You just heard the hearsay, bias history, or know only bits and pieces about Thais. Hurry up, restore Preah Vihear. After that Thais will take over. Cambodia will be under Thailand protection just the way you were before French and Khmer Rouge took over. You take Preah Vihear now and the Thais will take Khao Phra Vihan and the entire Kampucha later!!!
This time I’ve really run out of patience for this man. How I wish he could have been more reasonable. Below is my comment to him.
Dear Mr. Tavorn,
As the owner of this blog, I’ve tried to keep restraint so as to avoid sparking racist discussion here. Now that you’ve brought it up again, let me respond to your comment.
First of all, please call us Khmer. We are not Khom nor Khamen (nor Kha-Men) as some Thais like to call us.
Second, you said we were wrongly accusing/blaming the Thai people. It’s true that all races in this world comprise of both good and bad people. However, your comment didn’t at all bring us any better impression of your people and country. At a personal level, you are representing the attitude of a group of overly nationalistic Thais whom we loathe to the bones. Your disrespect and thirst for other people’s territory and national heritages show us the true colors of yourself. Before you even started barking, I suggest you read more history books – esp. the unbiased ones not written by Thais. While reading, ask yourself these questions — Who built the temple? Who invaded and took over it? Who lost the ICJ ruling? And again who, in the end, got the temple back? You are just way too ethnocentric. Be more open-minded please.
Third, I wouldn’t deny the help Thailand provided Cambodia with the refugee crisis back in the early 80’s; I am very grateful to that. However, was that a sincere help or was it a result of international pressure? I have a countless number of relatives who were mistreated and almost died in the hand of Thai soldiers, who robbed them of their money and dumped them in minefields along the Dangrek Mountain Range. If you would like to listen directly from these innocent victims, I am more than happy to put you in touch with them.
Fourth, please get the FACT straight. UNESCO didn’t take side with Cambodia. Nor did we encroach onto Thai territory. They were only doing what was right. The rightful owner deserves to get back what was taken. The 1962 ICJ ruling stated very clearly that Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia. What is wrong with us managing the temple inside our own home? Please stop being so gullible by listening to all the hot air your “foxy” politicians blow. Get back to reality, my man.
Last, I can’t see the possibility of you or your country taking over Cambodia anytime soon. Cambodia isn’t that easy for anyone to take over. We are protected by international laws, organizations and communities. We, Cambodians, would rather die for our nation if that ever happens. In addition, I also don’t see your government doing that either. Thailand is bombarded with too much crisis at home to ever care about this. My advice is for you to deal with these internal issues first, or your demise will come soon.
Good luck!!
Mongkol

These kind of exchanges are always so frustrating. Most people are not interested in a discussion, but instead are just aiming to waste your energy and time. It’s hard not to let things get to you. Sometimes this cartoon gives me perspective:

Some Thais, esp those ultranationalists, still live with the mindset of the old world which came to an end 1989. During that world, some of its peoples invaded, occupied, suppressed and killed other ethic groups and citizens because they wanted a big territory and even slaves. But these acts led loads of wars, killing millions and causing hatred among countries and neigbhoring ones, for example, Cambo and Thailand. But the new world sets a new light: Cooperation for development and prosperity for all. New eastern Europe and Europe, say Poland and Germany, have never had any border issue since 1989. As a result, the two have enjoyed growth interestingly. Let’s me finish my comment: Hopefully, Cambodia and Thailand learn to work together and deal with border issues with peaceful means as soon as possible so that the peoples can brace a new mindset and smile cordially toward each other.
Wishes for all,

Hi Bong Mongkol,
It is a great analysis and reconciliation. I think we are living in a globalized world, people should learn to respect others, try to tolerate, then the world will live in peace. Life is short, why do we all try to creat hatre and left to the next generations as we all suffered now. Let me give a quot from Gandi: An Eye for and Eye, sooner the World will be blind!!!. Respect others the same way as if you want other to respect you, from “7 Habits” Book. Sopheap.
Comment by Sopheap — Monday, July 14, 2008 @ 1:15 PM
I agree with Globalman and personally I (millions of other Cambodians and Thais too, i guess) dont want no fight. It’s just a matter of misunderstanding and miscommunication, i believe, and till the day its found and fixed, i’m kinda hopeless about Cambodia and Thailand being able to settle this so-called “ancient hatred”.
Perfect demarcation of the borders between the two countries wouldn’t solve it either, believe me. But how? I’d leave it to unbiased historians and peace builders who I’d suggest work together to find the way out.

Why Thai people always wanted the properties that belong to Cambbodia. Why don’t you ask for everytrhing in the world to be yours?????
Why don’t you go to other countries in the world to ask all their properties and bring to Thai?????
Please remember in mind that, Not all generations are the same and everything has been change.
Don’t ever think that you are wise enough!
True is still true! You cannot change the true!
Whatever you do to change but i am sure that the ture and what you did is still fololow you forever. then how cna you smile and happy with all the souls and the ture is following you and your nation and cry to you to ask for theirs back?????
Cambodia never want anything from your country even we knew that where you are standing on are not yours.
How many years will you live on this earth????? predict first then you can stay longer to protect Cambodia like you dream. you don’t want to live in a minute of peaceful and relax???
Bear in mind again that Cambodia will never let your dream come true. Anyway, thank you for your remind to all Cambodian to try to protect our nation and our properties.
Thanks so much for that. We sure and we are taking care of our nation very well.
One more thing, it is not happy to use or get benefit from something that is not belong to you or you will be destroyed by nature because you steal from someone in any kind of action.
Why you treat us so cruel????? You have killed our people and hurt and harm our people alot.
How can you change the history???
Don’t you remeber that Thai is just small group of people who were lived in Cambodia and because our king too trust on you that s why things happen like today. You shoudl remeber your orgin.
CAMBODIA never want to fight with anyone or argure with anyone. We love peace and we want to see the world togetgher like they said the world but one country.
Please stop killing my Cambodian and stop want to get something is not yours. I don’t think that all are blind and cannot see the ture.

It’s ashamed to see comments by this airheaded Thai dude named Tavorn. Historically, Khmer King had trusted Thai people by allowing them to educate in Cambodia during the Angkorian period. As a result, Thais served as spies and backstabbed Cambodian Kings and people. Who could be more greedy than Thai people in this world? They took Khmer lands and shamelessly claim as theirs til this day.
In regards to the Preah Vihear Temple, the International Court ruled in favor of Cambodia, that the temple siutates in Cambodian soil. Aren’t Thai people have respect to the court’s decision? If not, what’s the basis ground and principle for you guys’ daily living? Don’t let your mental development regress to the ice age period where your’re thinking and mentality are not civilized. What do you get out of being greedy by trying to claim our ancestors’ treasures as yours? Please forget the childish thinking that your country could take over Cambodia. It will never happen. Your government can’t even deal with the three southern provinces that are currently retaliating against them. To deal with Cambodia, it’s tough. I mean it!!!!

Die alone whoever you are and want to die for! i would rather die for a rational cause! i would not die for khmer or Thai foxy politicians. Let come to term with reality, listing of Preah Vihear is nothing, the matter of truth is Cambodia has bowed to Thailand’d demand for not daring to even claim the so called overlapped area of 4.6 square km. The area actually belongs to Cambodia as per the Franco-Siam treaty in 1907. There has never been such a thing as white zone and the Khmers themselves now accept this as a white zone. In economic sense, Thailand stands to gain and get what they set to out to achieve; We Khmers remains stupid to buy into the nationalist game played by khmer politicians prior to the July election.
Khmers keep repeating historical mistakes, fight and die for their supreme leaders at all causes though knowing that those leaders are at the same time mistreating their own innocent people. Khmer famous movie star got shot and killed more than ten years ago, and perpertrator is still at large. These same Khmer leaders utters no words on the case!
Learn to love our own people and take good care of our own people first before anyone else learn to love and respect Khmers.
Comment by siem reap — Tuesday, July 15, 2008 @ 4:37 AM
No offense to the Khmers or Thais. But do you know why Cambodians celebrate? Because of the World Heritage status of Preah Vihear? But they didn’t celebrate when the Royal Dance was listed. Nor did they do it for Angkor Wat.
Comment by ... — Tuesday, July 15, 2008 @ 9:10 AM
Thailand needs to worry about its own political crisis. It claims to be a strong Buddhist country, where the people should and supposedly learn how to respect others, especially others’ properties and heritage. Greed, wrongful claims and mistreating others will bring crisis, misfortune, and unrest to its country. The violence in the south is a clear example. Thai people can not tolerate if any Thai or foreigner disrespects their religion, king, etc. If religion is embedded in their daily living, why don’t let go of their greed and stop trying to pursue something that’s not theirs. Learn to be satisfied of what you have and let go of greed, grudge and hatred. Aren’t Thailand a well known strong Buddhist country? Try to adhere to Buddha’s teachings and find peace within yourselves. I have respect to every country. But, at times, it’s hard to tolerate someone like Tavorn. I don’t want to stoop that low as he did. My advice to you and your country is to improve your image and stop annexing into others’ properties or land. Work to improve your country’s image by eradicating delegalizing prostitution, etc.. It’s ashame to know that Thailand use prostitution as a mean to better its economy, especial in a strong Buddhist country where morality supposed to be high. Also, try to make friends with your neighbors. . . not too many neighbors like Thailand, especially its people attitude and how they perceive others.

Growing up Khmer/Thai, I never knew that Thais or Cambodians saw each other in such a way. It was only until high school and college this was shown to me. After reading these comments, I was shocked! that anyone of any race would have the dignity to sprout such harmful nonsense towards Khmer’s or any other race. You were very well spoken and replied very respectfully. And I truly admire anyone who is able to stand up for what is right. I don’t have hate towards Khmer or Thais I was raised to forgive and never forget. We learn from the past in order to provide a better future for ourselves and those around us. We are all brothers and sisters, even if some choose not to follow.

It’s a clear cut that Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia. It’s culturally Cambodian and was built by the Khmer (Cambodian) kings. Anti-government group known as PAD wrongfully claims Preah Vihear as Thai’s to stir up nationalism among Thais who lack knowledge of historical facts. The real purpose is to overthrow the current government of is seen as proxy of Thaksin. The link to an article below shows that this Thai writer has a better understanding of the situation.

I don’t know y i liked the thai ppl so much; watch their dramas, learn their language. I was a stupid kid, still am i.
I wish we were not protected and needed to fight to survive. I wana see these ppl really love their country, Kampuja.
The Thais are born nothing better than us. I wana fight them. I wana destoy them though I might be destoyed instead. I wish the Khmers hadn’t been so soft and peaceful. We might have been better off being a Hindi. Whatever!
We, not us but our old fathers, were strong.
I’m very upset. I wish I could live abroad and lost my memory of who i was and of what citizen i am, for that i couldn’t destroy these ppl that are hungry for my land.
I wish there was no humanity on earth so that i can fight and die peaceful-mindedly. So i wouldn’t hear or see these ppl looking down on my ppl, on my land i’m born in.
for what i realize i’ve liked my ppl as much as i’ve wanted to forget it.
I wish there were a national service in my country. and i’m sighing.

The reason Khmer celebrated Preah Vihear because it took 3 years to make UNESCO to accept it. Since 2005 until 2008, Thailand kept opposing Cambodia by saying this saying that as a pretext to confuse UNESCO not to accept Preah Vihear to be listed in the world heritage. But, this time 2008 the meeting was held in Quebec, Canada and the Thai govt showed disrespect to UNESCO by voting its own Thai govt not to list Prah Vihear in the world heritage even before the UNESCO decision. The UNESCO maybe thinks that’s an insult to UNESCO so UNESCO accepted to list Preah Vihear in responding the Thai govt.
